À LA MODEST :: Conservative Indie Fashion Style Blogger - a la modest - a la mode st. - conservative indie style blog blogger

Hardly any idea nowadays is original, but some ideas give birth to experiences that are totally new and fresh to the consumer. Auctions for example have been around as far as 500 B.C., but eBay revolutionized the way we think about and deal with auctions through the Internet. Everyone can now start and participate in an auction—everyday, anytime. eBay has existed since 1995, and after them came a slew of other auction sites with different business models and niches.

So here comes our niche: FASHION. The most popular style websites and fashion apps have their mommies too. Learn about our latest friends in the fashion industry and their family resemblance.

1. Social Bliss – StumbleUpon/Pinterest for Fashion Finds (web: free)

Whereas StumbleUpon and Pinterest could be for ANYTHING, Social Bliss is purely for your fashion finds. Want to stumble a site or pin an image that’s related to fashion? You can use Social Bliss for that. They have a button labeled “Spot It” that you can install on your browser for fast grabbing just like StumbleUpon.

2.  TopHatter – eBay for Fashion (iOs app: free)

Although eBay has its own category called Fashion Vault, TopHatter is unique wherein it’s more like The Sims and eBay combined. You are a cartoon bidder in a cartoon room, with other cartoon characters, participating in real auctions. This perhaps sounds more like Second Life but with more innocent avatars :) If you are a seller in either eBay or TopHatter and are ready to send out your packages, you can also take advantage of delivery services in the form of an auction as well. What? Yes like they say, no idea is original!

3. Fashion Terms – Wikipedia/Dictionary (iOs app: $1.07)

I’d say the Fashion Terms app is more like a Dictionary than Wikipedia. It gives you a concise definition with illustration for each term. If you’re anything like me, I need something like this if I am going to at least pretend that I know a thing or two about fashion ;-)

4. Trendabl- Instagram for fashion (iOs app: free)

Tumblr/Twitter is instant blogging.  Instagram is instant picture blogging. Trendabl is instant picture blogging about fashion.

There are so many fashion-related apps and sites out there that are definitely noteworthy but are not on this list. Can you name anymore that may have a resemblance to an older online idea?

Unfortunately, no I can’t! I didn’t even know about these, Rachel!
The eBay one cracks me up! How funny! Virtual bidding! =0

What made you decide to change the name back to “A La Modest”?
    Have a great day,

You left 3 of the same comments! Yeah, I was thinking about the name change a lot yesterday. I decided to have the logo be “ÀLAMODEST,” and keep its original pronunciation as “a la modest.” I’ll reply to your blog about this more ;-) It was around the same time I believe where I stumbled upon (hehe, well not really Stumble Upon) another blog that stole my name, perhaps because I abandoned it. I don’t blame her for doing it, but I wish she would’ve asked me first to see if the name change was permanent.

I have gone totally crazy about apps since I’ve got myself an iPhone. I have an app for everything! And several “Fashion” folders haha! I use: Reward Style, Beso, Asos, Polyvore, Vogue (which is called FashionVogue) and some other favourite shops like Stradivarius I don’t know if it exists in the US! I also use a lot of apps for my blog, like WordPress, Google Analytics and another couple of app that basically do the same like iDashbord, MailChimp and Pages for Facebook Pages. XD I also have Pose but I never use it, Instagram is more than enough for me! So I don’t think I will ever use Trendabl, even if it does look nice! It’s just too much stuff, I am going to forgot about eating someday! (hahah it already happens when I’m working at my laptop XD) So what’s going on with your blog name and logo? I loved the “lace-y” one! Who stole your name? Unbelievable!

    Hey Rachel,

nice finds you got here, thx for calling ‘em out. I have another one that’s brand new and was just published a couple of days ago. It’s called ‘FAD – The ultimate Fashion Dictionary’ and is basically an iOS Fashion Dictionary App for the iPhone.

    Check it out here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fad-ultimate-fashion-dictionary/id673684905?mt=8

If you want to know more about the project and how it came about, read the full blown story about the Fashion Dictionary App here: http://www.speak-fashion.de/home/fad-the-ultimate-fashion-dictionary

Thx again for your wonderful listing.

    Cheers,
    Thomas

Hi Thomas, thanks for the app suggestion!

Elisa, It’s someone on blogger/blogspot, so you can just Google it to find her. I’d rather not post her link. Yeah, I downloaded Trendabl just to blog about it. I don’t really have the need to use it all! It surprises me that even my mom downloads tons of apps for just about everything she wants or needs. I don’t like crowding my phone, same with my computer, and I’ve always been like that. I am a bare minimalist with apps. I’m glad Instagram has videos now, because I couldn’t get into Vine.

I used to be all e-newsletter crazy when the Web first appeared in our home. I signed up for almost every e-newsletter of a topic or brand I liked when I was in middle school. Of course, that led to major spam. I really miss that first time experience and excitement around the Internet. Although I am your age, I understand why you got app crazy when you first got your iPhone!
