Contrary to what you might think based on what you see on À LA MODEST, I actually wear jeans and sneakers a lot. I was never really a jeans-and-sneakers kind of person in the past. Being a girl who likes to move a lot now, it’s necessary to wear comfortable clothes. I like wearing statement coats and scarves on top of casual clothes, just to mask the whole laid back and lazy look with something more put together.

This coat from Ami Clubwear is my new favorite inexpensive coat. Actually, it is simply my new favorite coat, which happens to be very inexpensive. It looks so much better in person, and it makes me feel like an ’80s Vogue executive. I just love the details on it! For the price, it is also very well made. I suggest your buying a size up though if you have muscular or thicker arms. I ordered a small, and it feels right everywhere but my arms.

Since I don’t wear jewelry much at all, scarves are my go-to accessory. I’ve never actually owned an infinity scarf before (gasp), usually just pinning together the ends of longer scarves to make them look like infinity scarves. Oh boy, now I’ve been living in this scarf by Mooncats even whilst indoors. It is light weight, fluffy, and smooth—just like the way I like my eggs. Before I received my scarf in the mail, I thought it would have a plaid pattern on it, considering it’s called “black plaid” on the company’s website. But in actuality, the lines never cross to make the pattern plaid. Perhaps the sheer nature of infinity scarves would allow you to force the lines to cross… Hehe. However, I still like the scarf a lot. The company name is also very cute. I would very much love to try their other products. This scarf alone makes me want to buy more infinity scarves. Why oh why haven’t I been into wearing them before?

Finding Your Constant During Seasonal Blues (SAD)

Winter is a time when many of us are feeling sad and lonely, regardless of circumstance. I find myself feeling most vulnerable on winter nights—the combination of cold weather and early darkness just tears me down. I am mostly introverted, but when the sun goes down, I am often needing and wanting company. I have my husband, and he is delightful and so much fun, yet I still get the blues. Didn’t I say, no matter the circumstance? Listening to music helps somewhat, but the songs that find me end up complimenting my mood. I don’t know how long I’ve been like this. but it just further reminds me of the importance of getting sunshine!

When the sun is bright, I just feel like everything is or will be okay. The feeling I get when I’m basking in the sun is like the feeling of having someone’s arms wrapped around you, keeping you warm. In that moment, I feel loved. Secure. Protected. Special. Beautiful.

No matter what kind of woman you are, no matter your figure or profession, I think we can all agree that sometimes we feel like we’re not enough. It’s a joy to be a woman in many ways, but it also feels like a curse. In particular, our desire to be pursued and appreciated never ends. We are trapped in the illusion that our worth equates our beauty. Even after life settles down in a societal-familial sense, things never really settle down. Men on the other hand will always want to keep pursuing women, no matter what circumstance. It’s human nature—but not necessarily the good kind.

This is how I feel during the winter:

Note the underlying sadness.

When things change in your mood, your career, your happiness… find your constant and be grounded in it. What doesn’t shake, even amidst all things that do? Even when the sun goes away from our view, it is always there. It’s always working in the background even when you blame it for seasonal sadness. Dig even deeper, and you will find true joy at the source of it all, our Creator, lover of your soul and appreciator of your beauty.

The Many Sides’ Winter Look Book + GIVEAWAY! (CLOSED)

The Many Sides is a shopping hub for indie, alternative, edgy, and creative fashion. You could almost think of it as an art gallery where you could purchase the pieces and wear them! I gathered my favorite winter clothes from their website to show you! It seems like I found a favorite designer as well—Alice’s Pig. They had me at tartan. Plus of course, the fur and the whole 90s school girl vibe. Sadly, my school’s uniform that I wore from first grade all the way to freshman year was not plaid. I’m making up for it now! Alice’s Pig is a reflection of my ideal wardrobe, at least as of lately. It’s grunge but preppy and rebellious but conservative. That about sums me up! Oh, and geometry?

The tooth necklace above is from the designer Bukkehave. If I was into shopping for jewelry much, I would want to have their collection. It’s ghastly, dark, and downright beautiful.

The coat below is cute (also from Alice’s Pig), but I really just put this photo up because I can’t believe how strikingly similar this model’s face looks like mine in some photos when I had solid black hair! blitzynavycoatalicespig

Had I been writing this back in 2010, I would’ve picked Yohan Kim from The Many Sides as my favorite designer, down to the choice of hair and makeup. Below is an example of his work. I still marvel at the designs!

To give praise to the other awesome designers, I’ve included below Morphe to the left and Efi Dolcini to the right. themanysides2

So, on to the best part! The Many Sides is giving away two £50 vouchers to TWO winners! If you look at their website, you could surprisingly find many that are worth that much or less. My favorite top I featured above from Alice’s Pig for example is only £38.

Marijuana Sunday (Note: Humor not Heresy)

This post is intended to be lighthearted and not at all meant to encourage debauchery. Let’s clear this up first and foremost—I’ve never done marijuana.

I would like to share an unfortunate but funny story that occurred many, many years ago. When I was in high school, I used to be in charge of our church’s PowerPoint and video presentations. I dressed up backgrounds and photos on the slides to match the sermon for the day. It was Palm Sunday, and naturally, I wanted the background to have palm leaves. Off to Google image search I went (past midnight I’m sure) to find the perfect background. At the time, I did not care so much about copyright laws. I was a kid, and I was reckless.

Sunday morning came, our pastor’s sermon began, and my slides were live to an audience of about two hundred. Many were there just as visitors, being that it was Palm Sunday. A few minutes after the sermon started, one of the other pastors snuck up next to me in the dark pit where I was listening for cues for the next bullet point. I was usually alone down there, with the exception of some days when my older brother would help out. He would leave me alone down there whenever his girlfriend visited him at church. That day, his girlfriend was there. I was alone that Sunday morning, and needless to say, I was surprised by the company. So the other pastor whispered to me and said, “Rachel, your PowerPoint background has marijuana.”

I froze like Windows 98.

Didn’t I say I was a kid and reckless? I was also innocent. I was even trying to make excuses by saying, “Well, I thought it was actually a Canadian maple leaf.” For sure, I was living in the land of maple leaf.

I’m not here to talk about whether or not weed is good or bad for you. That is a topic I’d probably discuss on our other blog, Modern Life Survivalist! I do know that since extensive studies have come out on it, many intelligent and even religious people I’ve talked to either believe that’s it’s not that bad for you or have used it medicinally. I personally have met enough people who have been affected negatively by it that I don’t think it is good to use recreationally. Either way, I’d like to hear your experience or thoughts on it!

I’ve been very much into neutrals lately. Today, I was wearing browns and blacks, earthy but classy. The top is from SammyDress, the leopard print pencil skirt is from Forever 21, and the fur bomber jacket I am currently living in is thrifed. I’m also wearing dainty silver jewelry sent to me by BikiniLuxe. They have lots of beachy and hippie designs for a very affordable price. They have a Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday sale for 30% off with coupon “DISCOUNT30)!
