Independent Fashion Bloggers started a new Links á la Mode feature specifically for techies, and I am happy to be part of the very first list! Thank you. I truly apologize for being the slowest I’ve ever been in updating the blog, returning comments, and responding back to messages. I’m back in college full time while working, so it’s been quite stressful these past couple of months, but I will get back to all of you! I have also been wanting to write my usual lengthy posts, but I’ve been so pressed for time that I can only do outfit posts here and there. Good news for you though, my next post will be another lovely giveaway! I have yet again included my own list of links beneath IFB’s selection—some techy, some not, but do check them out!

Cool, Chic in a CLICK!

Edited by Christen Rochon

It’s the best part about the ever-changing age of technology – It’s fashionably evolving, it’s no longer cut, dry and unattractive! It is translated differently by everyone, it’s mysterious, fashionable and chic.  It’s infused in everything we do in many respects and this week’s Tech Links a la Mode highlight that whether your tech interest is simply blogging related, gadget-trend related or fashion related, it is very much ownable and deeply personal.

I’m excited to be apart of IFB and the inaugural editing of the IFB Links a la Mode: Tech, looking forward to seeing everyone’s tech posts throughout the year!

  • RGB Records – My husband’s and my storefront on Amazon, containing mostly used CDs and rare books and guaranteed to have the lowest prices on the Web. New items are added at least once a week.
  • Fashion’s Effect on Men and Women – “The net can be a dangerous place simply because people– both men and women– have allowed pictures to be taken (and things to be worn) that cross the line, but they excuse it in the name of fashion.”
  • Ridiculous Brian Eno Interview- I tweeted this post sometime ago. This was one of the funniest interviews I’ve ever seen. Brian Eno is genius. Please tell me you get this.
  • Why I’m Not Getting an iPhone- Even though I have an iPhone myself that I got as a gift, I still share the author’s dislike of being constantly consumed by technology. I do hate seeing people glued to their phones, especially in movie theaters!
  • Portlandia: Technology Loop – A sketch from one of my recent show obsessions, comically explaining why I don’t like being constantly connected on the Web. You can watch the clip of it below. The show has Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney. I see hints of Tim and Eric Awesome Show in this, but with less LSD.

Thanks again to Independent Fashion Bloggers for choosing my post on fashion in film this week! I have not reviewed the rest of the links here, so please go through them with caution. I am continuing the trend of selecting and including my own links along with every Links á la Mode feature I get. So this week, I have a few thought-provoking posts written by friends, who I am very proud of, that I wanted to share with you all. The selection that I have for you below is a bit more content heavy than some of my usual picks, but I strongly feel that they shouldn’t be left unnoticed.

Making it Your Own

Edited by WIT & Whimsy

One of the best parts about fashion is that it is translated differently by everyone.  It’s infused in everything we do in many respects and this week’s Links a la Mode highlight that whether your style is haute couture or vintage, trendy or thirfted, style is very much ownable and deeply personal.

I’m thrilled to have this be my inaugural editing of the IFB Links a la Mode, looking forward to seeing everyone’s posts throughout the year!

  • John Berger’s Ways of Seeing- I was introduced to poignant John Berger’s book and BBC series through Laura from From Those About to Shop. My favorite lines from this video clip include: “To be naked is to be oneself. To be nude is to be seen naked by others and yet not recognized for oneself. A nude has to be seen as an object in order to be a nude.” It is very introspective of the way men see women and vice versa. I must warn you that there is nudity in this.

Links à la Mode and Dip-a-Pet

January 22nd, 2011

Hey all! To those who read my tweet about my next “social suicide” post, this isn’t it! That should come next week.

I’ve been featured again on Independent Fashion Bloggers‘ Links à la Mode for this week. As I usually say, I strongly advise you to practice caution as you go through these links. If you haven’t been noticing, I’ve also been blurring parts of the images of IFB’s graphic because I need to have at least whatever image displayed on my blog represent the nature and purpose of à la Modest. I repost IFB’s feature whenever I get chosen for the week as part of their requirement, so I really can’t omit links or even have the time to go through all of them to check. I am however leaving you with my links for the week beneath IFB’s links as part of my new tradition for every Links à la Mode feature I get! Enjoy and have a great weekend!

“I have confidence that spring will come again, Besides which you see I have confidence in me”

Edited by Florrie Clarke of Intrinsically Florrie

Within this week’s links I kept noticing a resounding honestly in the heartfelt posts. When we blog or choose an outfit we are putting ourselves out there for all to judge, and it’s not surprising that doing the activity can have an affect on our confidence for better or for worse, especially when feedback starts coming in.

There’s also been a sense of rebellion in the air: from the emergence of the punk style to controversy over Vogue, and in the week that saw the spectacle which is the Golden Globes rises a questioning of what the red carpet is all about.

Thanks to Independent Fashion Bloggers for liking my post about the potato sack outfit enough to post it up on your links! I honestly thought that entry was hit or miss and would only be really appreciated by people with the modest mindset. Anyway, I was thinking about having my own set of links to put up along with this selection whenever I get chosen or just whenever I get into a lull. That way I get to fulfill IFB’s requirement for reposting the links for the week as well as show you some of the interesting links I personally pick out and approve across the Web. I’m going to start today, so scroll on down to the end of this post!

Stylish Priorities

Edited by: Jennine Jacob of Independent Fashion Bloggers

Nothing like the end of the year to get you thinking. The holiday season is not only a time for giving, it’s a time for reflecting. Whether your giving lavish gifts or wondering if shopping takes away from the spirit of the season, or just plain having fun with all the holiday parties (it’s time to dress up!) this weeks links run the gamut from profound thoughts. Some of my favorites were how fashion has no age limit and just in time for New Year’s Resolutions, will losing weight make you happier? Of course there’s some excellent posts about fashion blogging, questioning reblogging and content ownership along and balancing your blog with your life.

My Picks:

Being from Baltimore, I just can’t resist posting these two links I found this week on John Waters (and some other neat links). Enjoy!

  • Goregirl’s Dungeon: Nothing Says Christmas Like John Waters and Fruitcake!
  • Vice Style: Cum des Garçons (John Waters yet again!)
  • The Thing Is: Why the Burlesque Show is Almost Over (written by friend David Gasten who I interviewed several posts ago)
  • Brittany Bullen- Get a Modest Girl to Marry You (Youtube, sent to me by request. Hilarious!)
  • Comme des Garçons – Visit their official website if you haven’t. I love it!
  • Tumblr- My tumblr account where I post just about everything I visually like that I come across

Snippet from Vice Style’s interview with John Waters about Comme des Garçons:

Rei Kawakubo invented looking like you got ripped off in a thrift shop. She’s an artist and not trying to be funny exactly, but she’s using wit. My father will never get the joke; he says, “You bought that?!” I wear these things to redneck bars and people would never guess I paid a lot of money for them, It makes me chuckle. But I think it’s the youth that make high fashion pretentious. When I was young I just wore what I could get. You look silly in proper fashion when you’re young but once you’re over 40 you need all the help you can get. I basically pay too much money for clothes that poor people would be embarrassed to wear. Wearing Comme des Garçons is wearing high fashion, but without bragging. And that’s the key, that’s old money and the opposite of nouveau riche.

The Power of Words

Edited by: The Sunday Best

One story dominated my thoughts this week, and I was glad to see an IFB member tackle it in a post. I’m talking about the Marie Claire article. I’m not going to link to it, or even say what it was about, since I assume you dialed in people are familiar with it. [Pulls out soapbox.] The problem with the article, and its apparently apologetic writer, isn’t the ignorance it exhibited, or the hate it might engender, or even, I would argue, the sentiment expressed, although it was certainly the worst example of each. The problem was she used the most demeaning language she could think of to describe a group about which she apparently cares. She used this language and neither her nor her editors nor anyone at Marie Claire saw fit to deny it. And Marie Claire’s ridiculous mea culpa, where they celebrated the “discussion” they had fostered, was like saying the Titanic sinking was good for discussions about marine safety. Worst of all was the author’s own apology: “I never wanted anyone to feel bullied or ashamed after reading this”. So you used the most demeaning language you could think of–edgy!–and called people gross–keeping it real!–and were shocked, SHOCKED, to find them taking offense. I would call her a liar but out of deference to liars, she might just be an idiot. Think before you write – words are powerful.

Costume Drama: A Break From All Things Outfit

Edited by: Holier than Now

It’s the Halloween season, when some of us choose to experience the thrill (or horror) of looking nothing like ourselves for a night. For those of you who blog or socially post your outfits, perhaps it’s a chance to take a break from the judgmental eye of the spotlight (consider Love Brown Sugar and One More‘s pieces on the subject) – one night where you turn in “looking good” for looking scary, time period-accurate, or just … a little sexier than usual. Inspired? Find last minute costume inspiration from Tickle Me Chic and more.

And for those of us who don’t celebrate the witching hour, there’s still a chance to step away from the closet and remind ourselves that great lingerie, shoes, bags, and jewels can make even a white tee and jeans look scary good.

Awesome blossom! I haven’t submitted anything to Independent Fashion Bloggers in a long time, but I am finally back! Here is their weekly roundup, and I am on the first link with my twin sister, Björk. To view all of my features, I have compiled them here. As always, as a disclaimer, I don’t always agree with everything that is on here, so please practice some caution. Besides that, outfit shots are coming either later tonight or tomorrow!

Hats Off!

Edited by: Thom of The Sunday Best

With fashion weeks in full swing it would have been easy for the IFB fold to post multiple photos and call it a day. Hats off to these dedicated writers for continuing to pump out original content on often thorny issues (negative blogging anyone?). In particular it was nice to finally see more than one male blogger throwing his hat into the ring. Dressed for Dinner – we salute you and your lovely beard.
