How COOL are these boots? These are made by a company called Gipsy Dharma (I just love that name). Two of these leather boots are named “Mischievous Fairy,” and I think the name suits the design of these boots very well. Oh how I’d love to pair these with some black tights and a laid back outfit on a nice Spring day! They’re like Planet of the Apes meets Peter Pan meets swashbucklers…

I think you’ll need something like this to transform a lonesome stroll in a local park into roaming around a magical forest.

Their About Us section on their website is total icing on the cake:

Unique clothing and leather boots for women.

Light and flexible, like second skin.

Barefoot feeling for all you dancers, fairies, pixies, gipsies and space travellers :)

Love & Light. Your Gipsy Dharma.

Rainbow Pashmina Paisley Brite

February 4th, 2013

iristy1I got this Rainbow Pashmina Paisley scarf compliments of Iristy the other day and paired it with my new faux fur leg warmers (I am currently obsessed with Russian styles, so I’ve been looking for a lot of Instagram inspiration on that). My mother-in-law looked at me and said, “Aww, you look like an Eskimo!” Not too long ago Rob and I were watching an episode of Malcolm in the Middle where Francis comes home with his new Eskimo wife to show his parents. Rob said I could play an Eskimo, and I wasn’t really sure how to take it. I do like snow and igloos and wolves as my ride, but that doesn’t mean a thing…

After looking at these photos, I immediately thought of a somewhat drab and toned down Rainbrow Brite. This scarf is better than how it looks on the website! It looks short on their storefront, but this reached down to just above my knees! I am 5’5″ (of course with these wedges on, I am about 5’8″), so you can see how wide and long this scarf actually is. I’ve been avoiding adding anything too bright to fit in my wardrobe’s new direction. I was afraid that this scarf might clash with that, but it really didn’t. This scarf is as sexy as Bollywood.

I forgot to take photos of the other side of this scarf. It wasn’t even mentioned on Iristy’s site that this is completely reversible. On the one side, it is rainbow. On the other, it is tan. It is equally magnificent. The texture of this is like velvet. I love it! This was the outfit I had on underneath. I like to wrap big scarves around me and fastening them down with a belt just like this.

Barns & The Noble

December 27th, 2012

alamodestIt was really pretty out the past couple of days with the exception of the wind. I wouldn’t have had to wear a coat without it. I was going to wear a hat to match my outfit, but I quickly realized that that was a terrible idea. I’ve had one of my favorite childhood watches (Baby G) get flushed down the toilet once (among other things), and I am not going to lose a hat (to the sky toilet) today. alamodest
Though (right now) the weather is frightful, I hope your Christmas was delightful! Before you go, do check out Cameron Miquelon’s 2012 closeout post featuring some of the coolest bloggers. ;-)

Cheers,
Rachel.

Shoe Porn: Are you addicted?

December 21st, 2012

I’ve seen “shoe porn” used in titles of collages filled with beautiful shoes (made a few myself), and I’ve even seen people use it as a hash tag to share their love for shoes with other enthusiasts. At last, there is a web store that is called just that. By the looks of it, it might be a start up, but they’ve already got a good amount of eye candy up. Above are just a few of the pairs I was drooling over earlier today. All just gorgeous, aren’t they? I have yet to see this turn into a Pinterest shopping site of some sort purely for shoe lovers.

Perhaps it’s wrong to make fun of the actual addiction to porn, but I just can’t resist the idea of Shoe Porn. One of my friends’ moms asked me what my vice was. I looked at her funny and asked, “what do you mean?” She said, “you know, some women are into shoes, clothes, bags…” I told her I was mostly into shoes. She gave me a grin back and said, “I thought so.”

Are shoes YOUR #1 fashion vice?

You’re going to see a lot of these pieces in the fall—sweater dresses (or just plain big sweaters), leggings/tights/skinnies, and boots. Ah… but I love them! I’ve been living in cozy sweaters since ’09. I have just about every color of wool berets in my closet that are fairly priced, because I lose these just about as often as I wear them! These things really do never get old. Sweater is too plain? Top it off with a nice waist cincher! What’re you favorite fall pieces, overworn or not?

Dream of the 90s: Grunge

July 2nd, 2012

Taken from Portlandia

I never thought I’d put the 90s on my list of fashion raves, especially when it used to be my least favorite decade for style. The musical shift from the 80s to the 90s may have been the most awkward transition in the history of music, but in the fashion world, the change didn’t seem to be all that bad. While I was rockin’ platinum hair status before redoing my hair to a darker blue, I did enjoy the “trashy” 90s look a lot. My favorite day was when I had messy hair (both on purpose and accidental, because I somewhat fried my hair with all the bleaching, so I just kind of went with the look). I wore baggy button downs as a cardigan with some of my favorite bands’ buttons on, a Jets t-shirt, black bike shorts, and brown hiking boots with white socks. So, my outfit kind of looked like the first picture you’ll see below (different and livelier colors and with a button down to go with the shirt). Here are some of my favorite iconic 90s looks:
CYCLING/BIKE SHORTS

This image was taken from Asos, and those sequin cycling shorts are killer. Sadly, they are out of stock now. I have been generally obsessed with cycling shorts lately. They are great for layering.

PLAID SKIRTS & SHIRTS

Plaid skirts are great. However, I don’t think I’ve found one with the perfect length—right on the knee or slightly above. Sadly, I find a ton of minis everywhere, but I found a remedy for really short skirts by just wearing bike tights underneath. They look really cool, contrary to how it may sound. I like the uniform look a lot, and plaid is perfect for that look. I was deprived of a pleated plaid skirt when I was in private school. I had a uniform that had colors resembling an inverted tree—light beige top, green pleated skirt (and tan socks). And oh yeah—I just bought some Reeboks that were almost the exact same pair as Audrey Horne’s (Twin Peaks) black & white oxfords. However, I thought the quality was not great, because the paint started to peel off the first day I wore them out. I’m selling them here if you are interested (update: SOLD.)

DARK BROWS & LIPSTICK

I think my favorite color for lipstick has been wine for a long time now. Occasionally, I used to opt for a really bright red lipstick. I don’t really wear lipstick too often though, because I find that it dries my lips. In fact, a lot if not most chap stick and lip stick dries your lips. Perhaps lip tints work better? Of course, drinking a lot of water is hands down the best thing you can do for your skin and your lips.

BEANIES, HIKING BOOTS, VESTS

Though there are many others that are iconic of the 90s, the things I put up are just looks I’ve been trying out and enjoying these days. My husband Rob looks great in 90s clothes, which he likes to wear still :) Is there anything from the 90s that you used to wear and/or still would put on today?
