GF is your girlfriend.

December 17th, 2011

This is what I came home with after a trip to Wegman's GF aisle this weekend: wheat substitutes.

So, after a three-year battle with what I thought was just a mean combo of severe stomach aches and migraines (and constant forgetfulness), I finally realized that the cause must be gluten.

It’s funny how I’ve been hearing more about GF (gluten free) this and that—popping up on restaurant menus and chit chat more than ever—like a pink Cadillac now that I’ve discovered that I have a gluten sensitivity. I used to seriously poke fun of how certain people take up these silly diet “fads.” However, this GF lifestyle is probably here to stay. After just three days of eating without gluten in my food, I already feel much more energetic, awake, happy, productive, and concentrated. So far, I’ve had no waves of stomach pains and headaches.

I’m not sure if I have had this sensitivity or allergy to gluten since birth. I just know that after moving out of my parent’s house (where we had rice almost everyday instead of bread), my body started feeling different.  After getting married, I also completely switched from eating white bread to wheat and had it all the time. So then, I’d have these serious digestive problems where my stomach would expand to the size of a 27-week pregnant woman once in a while, and it would hurt so bad. It wouldn’t go away for hours. I couldn’t release gas even when I tried without taking some kind of anti-acid medication, so I carried Tums in my purse everywhere I went. There was a time when my stomach felt like it was being pierced as I laid on the floor crying and immobilized and thought I was going to die. I’ve also had two occasions in the past two or three months where my head spun and everything got blurry for a few seconds.

Along with the rest of these symptoms, I’ve also had an unexplained back injury where I had to stay in bed and be induced to sleep for three whole days doing nothing except eat. I literally couldn’t bend more than an inch without hurting myself, and the most powerful painkillers didn’t do much to help. I’m not sure if these recent events were at all related to wheat, but I sure have had a significant increase in my intake of wheat products these past three years.

After going on GF Web sites and learning more about celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, I learned that the intake of wheat for gluten-sensitive individuals is very harmful in both the short and the long term. The problems I was experiencing could’ve been slowly making my body more and more malnourished, and in turn making my back bone and muscles weaker. Continuing to eat wheat products could result in infertility, so I really hope that my old diet before going GF hasn’t done any serious damage.

I’m not completely sure yet whether it was truly wheat that was causing my digestive problems, but I sure feel better now without gluten. If my problems persist after two weeks of a GF diet trial, I’ll have to go back on gluten and see a doctor to get a test. It’ll be interesting this year going on our family vacation where a lot of my in-law family members have some kind of food allergy—I’ll fit right in!

As one of our GF friends said, “I eat what makes me feel good, and I don’t eat food that makes me feel bad.” Simple enough.

My husband has been a trooper and decided to join with me on the GF diet as much as he can. A GF diet is said in some journals and articles to have beneficial effects on weight and energy even for those who aren’t celiacs. We think this might be true, so he’s giving it a try. Some interesting things have been happening, though, since he started. He has been very fatigued and has gotten headaches and everything. We were worried at first that this might be a sign that he wasn’t getting the right nutrients or something, but upon further research (googling), we found many accounts of people who had had similar fatigue and pains. Here is something very important to note for those of you who are considering trying this dietary option: When you start a gluten-free diet, you are actually going to go through a sort of withdrawal. I’m not being very technical here, so I don’t want to misspeak, but I’ve read that it actually also might be caused by the adjustments your body is making to the way it digests. My husband says it feels like he’s gone running, but without all of the muscle pains from the run. So, it’s almost like you’re building up lactic acid or when you’re getting the runner’s “second wind,” because you don’t have all the same gooey carb stores that wheat normally gives you. So, in essence, your body is switching to a more fat-burning metabolism. That’s a good thing! Just a little extra note that my husband asked me to include.

Blonde for the Meantime

November 23rd, 2011

So, I’m blonde for the meantime before I turn my hair blue. I needed to go platinum in order to get the perfect shade of blue that I want, but I couldn’t get my hair to be evenly platinum. I still see traces of dark yellow even after using toner. Anyway, I hope that the blue hair turns out great. I’ll just have to be brave and ignore people who’ll stare at me.

Last week was a terrible week. Our dog Bobby died, and I was crushed immensely. He was my first dog and the best dog I ever got to know. He was a great companion, and I miss him dearly.

Sweet! Beauty of the Fall recently launched its second game available on the iTunes App Store—Balltastic Boombastic! It seems like this game has been generally more liked than our first game, Last Defense of Our Time, by people who’ve tried both. I personally don’t have a “favorite,” because I think the two games are very different from each other and thus incomparable. It’s like comparing apples and stereos, a tooth and a nail, or love and rockets—why would you even do it?

Anyway, if Last Defense of Our Time is inspired by the well-known old school Missile Command, I think Balltastic Boombastic! is inspired by my ever-beloved Puzzle Bobble/Bubble Bobble (バブルボブル Baburu Boburu)/Bust-a-Move—same game, different names in different regions. I guess it’s also kind of like Bejeweled, which I have maybe played once, and of course the more obvious Tetris and Dr. Mario. Balltastic is like all of these games but with a twist, a more challenging but rewarding twist that involves waiting and timing and a system of special “weapons” that you can unlock. It’s not all cute. It has these nasty balls called “impostors” (the bigger balls with numbers on them) that act like the villains of the game, and part of your objective (besides making sure you don’t reach the dotted fill line) is to kill them all before they mess you up. It’s really satisfying and addictive.

So if you’re interested, hop on over to the iTunes store and look for it! It is 99 cents to buy, and you’ll be supporting Beauty of the Fall, which includes this lady. Again, the fantastic boombastic music is artfully done by Perspection (my husband Rob) and the developer is my brother-in-law Dave. I recently made Perspection’s Web page (more like a splash page with links) and included some samples from the Last Defense of Our Time soundtrack which you can get on iTunes, eMusic, or Amazon.

Would you like a free promo code for any of BoTF’s games? Here’s the deal. If you promote us through your blog (mention, review, have me write a post for you, whatever), your Twitter, Google+, or Facebook account (preferably a fan page), we’ll send you a promo code for the game! It helps us and hopefully will make you plenty happy. Of course, we’d like it better if you decided to buy the game and still promote us!

Last Defense of Our Time was a success story despite all the bugs in the first couple of versions—we had tons of reviews and downloads in a short amount of time. We’re very happy about that. Thank you so much for all of your support!

Hey all,

For the past few posts, I’ve been mentioning that my husband Rob and his brother Dave have been making video game apps for the iPhone and iPad. I’m pleased to announce that their first game is finished! It is called The Last Defense of Our Time, a game with a sci-fi feel that is inspired by the popular retro game Missile Command.

Dave is the main brain behind LDoOT. He did the cool graphics and came up with the story, while Rob did the awesome 8-bit music under the name Perspection, wrote some of the clever jokes, and did the copyediting. The two make such a great team! The wives *ahem* were possibly their best inspirations and motivators for this game :) They’ve worked on this for months, staying up late and eating fourth meals at Taco Bell together. It was so much fun seeing the whole process of app making—and especially being a part of it all.

We had so many people download and review LDoOT when it first got featured on the iTunes App Store! It was great. The sad part, though, is that when the first couple of versions of LDOoT were released, the game wasn’t optimized to run on iOS devices with low memory capacity. That is why there were a lot of people on the reviews saying that the game crashed even before they got to play it. Thankfully, the problem has been completely fixed. I hope you’ll give it a try and leave some positive feedback on the app page! If you don’t have an iPhone/iTouch/iPad but know someone who does and is into games, I’d love it if you would let them know about LDooT. If you write for a game review blog, we can send you a coupon code to download the game for free if you’ll review it.

Here is the promo video:

You can get the soundtrack that Rob made via iTunes, Amazon, or eMusic by searching “Perspection – The Last Defense of Our Time.”

Beauty of the Fall is now making it’s next game—a faith-based kids app and another game called Planets. I hope for these next games, the turnout will be astronomical (Hint: I just made a joke…).

I’m just really happy to be in a family with creative craniums.

You can also help support us by liking our company Beauty of the Fall’s Facebook page, Perspection’s Facebook page, tweeting about the game, or simply just spreading the word around.

I think we can all agree that technology has become vital to the daily existence of bloggers. Who among us goes a week without playing around with coding, tinkering with our blog design, tweeting, downloading the newest photo apps etc.? Many of us who started out somewhat technology illiterate are now wearing our chic geek badges proudly. Thankfully, forums like IFB exist to nurture and encourage our self education when it comes to tech issues!

So, I hope you’ll take a moment to enjoy these featured posts. I daresay you’ll walk away with a valuable new nugget of tech related knowledge. Today’s link roundup really has a little something for everyone, no matter where your inner geek’s interests may lie!

Server of Satan

May 24th, 2011

So, what has been up? If you’ve seen my Tweets, Facebook messages, e-mails, or have just been on the blog this week, you probably already know that I’ve been jacked up big time by my villainous Web host, WebHostingPad.

I’m going to take this time to expose their devious schemes and republish this article everywhere on the ninnernets. Retweet and link to this post if you feel compelled to do so.

Although I do not believe Harold Camping and his prophesy-yet-again flop (apprently, he is still sticking with his Oct 21st prophesy), coincidentally, the blog shut down completely on May 21, 2011.  WebHostingPad had a massive and “rare” server crash that wiped out all my databases—including other customers. All gone, irreversible. Not only was this blog hosted on WHP, years of work that I did for other people in my business were also on there. The apocalypse may not have happened for everyone, but it sure felt like it for me. Back when I first signed up with them about almost two years ago, I did do my research and found them to be an okay company with so-so reviews. I bought into the extremely cheap price and astounding service that they promised and just went ahead and entrusted my life’s work to their malicious server, ignoring some of the negative feedback people had left in their reviews.

The day I found out that their servers crashed, I contacted tech support through e-mail, chat, and phone. None of them expressed their apologizes or were sympathetic in any way.  Only one employee that I caught on the phone admitted that it was their fault and couldn’t do anything to revert the damages. Everyone else that I conversed with through e-mail sent me short replies with no mention of this internally caused tragedy.  I believe it’s a ploy they have,  not saying anything in writing that can be potentially used against them legally. I tried my best not to be emotional about it, because I surely was devastated and mortified by the company’s reaction to all of this. As a side note: One thing I dislike about us females in general is our tendency to take our hightened emotions everywhere, including inappropriate and professional situations. I’ve dealt with those kinds of women in the business world, and I can really see the point of why some people firmly believe that only men should lead countries. There are rarely women who can stay feminine yet also be emotionally strong at the same time. Just food for thought, ladies. I’ll probably write more about this issue some other time.

Anyway, going back. Researching on more review sites, I found an adequate amount of negative feedback for WHP, with comments including the words “scam” and “rip off.” One guy said that his credit card got charged even after he cancelled his account. Some people also had their business Web sites hosted on their servers, so this crash (or other crashes in the past) cost them a lot of money and lost business. I was fortunate enough to have a somewhat recent backup of this blog and my other professional work, but I still lost a lot of posts and one entire business Web site that I made for a client. The client had paid over $2K for this work, but thankfully, it wasn’t being used at the time of the crash. God may have saved me in this tragedy by having this client let me go after they were done with the Web site before this crash happened. Even with that small, fortunate (yet outdated) backup of mine, WHP still should have been responsible in backing up their customers’ databases regularly. It’s most likely that not everyone hosted on their servers knows how to back up their own stuff, and it was clearly WHP’s fault for losing all that data. I’ve backuped and restored data easily in the past on other hosts, but this time, the backup that I got from WHP was faulty and incomplete. This was a unique and much more complex situation to solve even for a techy person like me.

WHP advertises a 99.9% uptime guarantee. What a lie. Even before this megacrash, my Web sites were only up maybe 70% of the time, but I let that go. A couple of months leading up to doomsday, they were only up maybe 30% of the time. Their service got exponentially worse. They have a 30-day money-back guarantee, but the problems didn’t start until way after that timeframe. One person from one of the reviews I read even said that immediately after 30 days, his Web site started to act bananas. It was too late for the man to get his money back, unfortunately. There was nothing he could do about it, because it was a policy clearly stated. I paid four whole years in advance to be hosted on WHP to get their most awesome low-cost monthly deal, but little did I know that I was baited hook, line, and sinker to their fraud. I wasn’t even halfway done my time, and they had already lost all of my databases—as long as the problems start after 30 days right? Fail.

I went on WHP’s Facebook page and posted comments questioning what had happened, without being rude or obscene. The next time I checked on the page, the comments were all gone, I was kicked out from the fan page (I wasn’t a fan anyway), and I hadn’t even gotten replies from the administrator. The comments on their page are kept positive, still promising the 99.9% uptime guarantee to anyone interested in their services. It’s best to just look at objective and reputable review sites when researching about companies.

I really want to sue this company for false advertising and damages, but as I looked everywhere on the Web for help, I read that it’s almost impossible to sue an Internet company, because of jurisdiction difficulties, among other things. Rarely have people won or even pursued lawsuits against online businesses. Almost all of them, including WHP, have terms of services that protect them from liabilities. WHP, I think (after trying to interpret their vaguely written fine print) has a policy that says they can only refund the amount of money the customer paid if ever they would have to legally do so—the thing is, whatever the other customers and I lost are worth much more than what we paid WHP! The difference is massive.

I was literally immobile and in tears for losing all that work and stayed up for days just trying to restore what databases I have backed up from the past. It was a difficult process because I didn’t expect something of this scale to happen beyond my control. Some of you have seen the dreaded default page I had up when I did a fresh installtion of WordPress,  a database connection error, a blank page, and what have you. I even saw a few comments come in right when this blog was still all wacky from the imperfect restoration process. Thank you so much for sticking with me through all of this. Some of your precious comments were also lost if they were left between the time I backed up this blog and when WHP servers crashed.  I was able to restore some of those missing comments and published posts, though, because they went straight to my e-mail. Thank goodness for redundancy. Redundancy is one of the things you need in order to protect yourself from losing digital things.

By the way, the title “Server of Satan” was not at all meant to have a religious connotation. I was trying to be comical and hateful at the same time, so please excuse me if it offended anyone, because I only meant to expose Web Hosting Pad for their evil ways.
